Tasting Notes

Frauenberg

2017 - Frauenberg Riesling GG
The nose is a great mix of herbs and super precise, almost firestone-like limestone minerality, slight pepper, slightly smoky, fruit notes of ripe pears and green apples, notes of stone fruits as well. On the palate super fine and elegant, starts slightly fruity and fresh, crisp acidity comes running, great spices from the razor-sharp limestone ground, herbal and some floral notes. Finishes with citrus and grapefruit peel and elegant spices. Wicked GG!

2013 - Frauenberg Riesling GG
The nose is powerful, powerful spicy minerality is accompanied by ripe stone fruit aroma of ripe plums and peach, great herbal notes and white pepper as well. The palate is pure elegance with a great acidity, powerful but still smooth, dense minerality, and lots of citrus and grapefruit peel. Finishes spicy, citrusy and slightly salty.

2011 - Frauenberg Riesling GG
Perfectly aged Riesling, whooohoo! The limestone minerality gives it a spicy, deep and complex nose with first honey, herbal spicy notes, ripe exotic fruit elements. On the palate fine and complex at the same time, juicy, smooth, elegant, still rich, beautifully integrated acidity, deep and mineralic. Finishes with slight tabac notes, spicy minerality and soft honey. Just fantastic!

2010 - Frauenberg Riesling GG
After nine years this wine has finally reached its peak. And it is a fantastic one. The nose is very fresh, full of spices and at the same time ripe fruit notes especially with ripe apples. On the palate perfect harmony of elegance, harmonic acidity that still has pressure, deep and intense minerality, fruit notes are a ripe mix of berries, apples and some exotic notes. In other words: You can taste that this vineyard is H.O. Spanier‘s favorite.

Kirchenstück

2016 - Kirchenstück Riesling GG
In the nose wonderful spicy minerality, smoky notes, pepper, even dark chocolate, grapefruit peel, quince, slight wood. On the palate elegant acidity, powerful mineralic body, spicy, very noble, citrus elements, smoky notes with minerality in the long finish. A proud Riesling!

Am schwarzen Herrgott

2017 - Am schwarzen Herrgott Riesling GG
This Riesling is so precise in its limestone minerality, deep and clear. The nose is calm elegance that only great wines have – added by decent yellow plums, quince, deep spices and minerals. On the palate this elegance happens again. A true Grosses Gewächs!

2016 - Am schwarzen Herrgott Riesling GG
Fine herbal notes in the nose, beautiful limestone minerality, spicy, on the palate crisp and precise minerality, light fruit aroma of peach and apricots with a straight acidity. Long finish of minerality and acidity with a salty end. A very noble dry Riesling!

Zellertal Kreuzberg

2017 - Zellertal Kreuzberg Riesling
Oliver Spanier from winery BattenfeldSpanier who is actually from #rheinhessen has acquired a vineyard in the Pfalz region: The Zellertal Kreuzberg which has a winemaking tradition since the 8th century. It got it little forgotten but now it’s coming back with a boom. The nose is filled with to-the-point, razorsharp limestone minerality, spicy and precise, the wine is full-bodied with great fruit notes of ripe yellow stonefruits, but most exiting is the great mix of spices and herbs like clove and pepper. On the palate defined by powerful spiciness, a super elegant acidity and fantastic complexity, so accessible, so heart-warming. Finishes forever with pepper-style spiciness. This baby is so young and already has so much character. We can only guess what you have in the glass in five years. It is a bit like the Cros Parantoux in the Burgund – even though it is not a grand cru but even more so an icon that can compete with them all.

Others

2018 - Hohen-Sülzen Riesling
The best “Ortswein” in Germany in 2018 has a nose to fall in love with, apricots, peaches, but not to fruity, all super-elegant, slightly smoky notes, tea, some herbal notes and beautiful dense minerality. One the palate pure elegance, crystal-clear minerality, smooth and dense, yellow stone fruits, perfectly integrated and animating acidity. Salty finish with orange peel, some chamomile and spices. Wicked stuff!
